Santorum’s Money-Man Stuns Andrea Mitchell on Live TV!

Wow, Did Foster Friess Really Say That?

Jonathan Cohn

[Please forgive me for quoting the entire article.]

Foster Friess, the conservative financier behind Rick Santorum’s super-PAC, was on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports” a few minutes ago. Mitchell asked him whether he was concerned about Santorum’s stands on social issues, and their potential to alienate voters. Friess said that he thought the social issues were a distraction, with so many people struggling financially—which is reasonable enough.

Then he said this:

This contraception thing, my gosh, it’s [so] inexpensive. You know, back in my days, they’d use Bayer aspirin for contraception. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn’t that costly.

Mitchell was speechless. As am I.

You can’t hold politicians responsible for what their supporters say. But it’s creepy, and offensive, that anybody living in the 21st Century would say that, let alone somebody with huge financial resources and a desire to influence American politics.

I would hope Friess apologizes for the statement—and that, at some point, Santorum makes clear he doesn’t share such sentiments.

Update: I’m not sure how I forgot this, but if you haven’t read Molly Redden’s profile of Friess, you should.

“WHERE ARE THE WOMEN?” 1

Rep. Carolyn Maloney said it best: “Where are the women?”

This morning, an all-male panel of religious leaders testified in front of a Congressional committee about birth control coverage. That’s right, only men — who are not doctors, by the way — were allowed to testify by the GOP leadership about critical women’s health coverage. No women.

It’s absolutely outrageous. The all-male GOP leadership is calling on all-male religious leaders to decide whether birth control should be fully covered by insurance plans. We cannot let this happen. We cannot stand by while Far Right Republicans once again try to send us back to the Dark Ages.

Stand with EMILY’s List now and tell the GOP that women’s health decisions should be made by women — not by anti-choice, anti-woman men.

After pleading with the committee chairman to hear from a female witness, the Democratic women on the committee — all of them EMILY’s List women — literally stood up for us and walked out. These are the women who will always have our backs, but we desperately need more of them — and that’s what we’re working to do every day at EMILY’s List.

It’s time to stand up — right now — and say that you will not watch quietly while anti-choice, anti-woman legislators and religious leaders work to dismantle everything we’ve achieved.

Add your voice now! Tell the GOP that women should be the only ones in charge of women’s health.

We have to fight. Right now. Let’s do it.

Thank you for all you do.

All the best,

Amy K. Dacey

Afghanistan’s Karzai in Pakistan for talks on Taliban

Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai (left) and Pakistan's Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in Islamabad on February 16 Hamid Karzai (L) has good ties with Pakistan’s civilian leaders, but not its military

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai is in Pakistan for talks expected to focus on attempts to bring the Taliban into the peace process.

Mr Karzai is likely to tackle claims that Pakistani military personnel continue to support the insurgency.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is due to join the meeting later for talks focusing on trade issues.

Earlier, the Afghan leader told the Wall Street Journal that he had already started discussions with the Taliban.

“There have been contacts between the US government and the Taliban, there have been contacts between the Afghan government and the Taliban,” he said in an interview published on Thursday.

“And there have been some contacts that we have made, all of us together, including the Taliban.”

He said Pakistan’s co-operation would make the process easier.  MORE

I just learned that the soon-to-be ex-Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin, plans to use part of the money that President Obama just secured for mortgage holders who are underwater, TO PLUG UP THE HOLE IN THE STATE BUDGE! Republican governors had done this before.  They decried The Stimuls, yet, posed for the photo with the giant-size ceremonial check…and then they used the stimulus money to balance their state budgets.  I cannot wait until he is recalled!
