WHEN YOUR EGO MAKES A FOOL OUT OF YOU
LUKE 14:8-11
By Dr. Phillip Paschal
I. INTRODUCTION
WHENEVER WE LIVE AS IF THE WORLD CAN’T GET ALONG WITHOUT US, AND WE MAKE OURSELVES TO BE MORE THAN WHAT WE ARE, IT IS LIKE LIVING IN A GLASS HOUSE JUST WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO THROW A STONE, WHICH WILL CAUSE OUR HOUSE TO TUMBLE DOWN AROUND US. YES MY BROTHERS AND MY SISTERS, ONE PROBLEM IN THE WORLD TODAY IS THAT OF EGOTISTICAL PRIDE. PRIDE, THE DESTROYER OF PERSONALITIES. PRIDE, THE BARRIER THAT BLOCKS HUMILITY. PRIDE, THE LAND MINE THAT HAS BLOWN MANY REPUTATIONS INTO SMITHEREENS. PRIDE, THAT THING THAT INFLATES OUR ATTITUDES, DISRUPTS OUR ALTITUDE, AND HINDERS OUR APTITUDE, IS A MAJOR STUMBLING BLOCK IN THIS WORLD IN WHICH WE LIVE.
THERE ARE MANY WHO LIVE AS IF THE JOB JUST CAN’T FUNCTION UNLESS THEY ARE IN CHARGE. THERE ARE THOSE IN THE SPIRITUAL ARENA WHO EGOTISTICALLY FEEL AS IF EVERYTHING IN THE CHURCH CENTERS AROUND THEM. BUT MY BROTHERS AND MY SISTERS, YOUR EGO CAN MAKE A FOOL OUT OF YOU IN THAT WHILE YOU THINK THAT YOU ARE ALL OF THAT, OTHERS ARE LAUGHING, TALKING, AND EVEN CRITICIZING YOU BEHIND YOUR BACK.
HOW MANY OF US KNOW SOMEONE THAT THEIR PRIDE HAS MESSED THEM UP? HOW MANY OF BEAR WITNESS TO THE FACT THAT INFLATED EGO’S GET BUSTED RATHER ABRUPTLY? YES MY BROTHERS AND MY SISTER, IF WE DON’T GET THE BEST OF OUR EGO’S, OUR EGO’S WILL GET THE BEST OF US, AND I AM HERE TO TELL YOU THAT YOUR EGO CAN MAKE A FOOL OUT OF YOU.

Today the hawks would have us continue the war in Afghanistan and start new wars in Iran and Syria. We, a Christian nation, are waging war for democracy and good among Muslim nations that hate us and worship another god. Why? I submit that we all are following God’s plan for us, revealed in The Bible: Revelations. Have you read it? Yes, it is difficult to understand. We have to turn to Bible scholars inspired by God to be His prophet. World War III, the last war, will be nuclear and will end by Jesus Christ’s devine intervention. Most of us are unaware how soon the world, as we know it, will end. Jesus told us to look for signs of His return. Many of us believe that we witness these signs today and look forward to Christ’s return.
My first experience with war was The Vietnamese War which I avoided fighting through the blessing of having a sliding hiatus hernia. While in the ROTC program, I naively wrote a paper against the war. I quickly lost my student deferment and was drafted. God provided a doctor’s note which I presented in the inductee line and was saved from and early death. Yes, there was “hell to pay” living a life of pain from the hernia. I accepted that this was a part of God’s plan for me: My own cross to bear. I sat down to write today’s post with no ideas. God inspired me write part of my story and bring to you a sermon on the Vietnamese war by Dr. Martin Luther King at the Riverside Church in New York City. Today I present his address as an

“O God of Life, Creator of the universe, Sustainer of all, we come before you in sorrow and anger at the killing on our streets and in our schools, workplaces and houses of worship. We come in repentance at our own participation in the culture of violence in our land. We come in hope borne of past victories over injustice, asking for strength and clarity and fortitude, that we might bring about transformation in our laws, in the ways we resolve conflict and address fear, in our tolerance for violence, in the hearts of our leaders and our fellow Americans. May we become a people who put our trust in You, not in our weapons. By your mighty power, and in your overwhelming love, renew our vision for peace and safety in our land, beginning with us today, we pray. Amen.”

Maundy Thursday (also known as Holy Thursday, Covenant Thursday, Great and Holy Thursday, Sheer Thursday and Thursday of Mysteries) is the Christian feast, or holy day, falling on the Thursday before Easter. It commemorates the Maundy and Last Supper of Jesus Christ with theApostles as described in the Canonical gospels.[1] It is the fifth day of Holy Week, and is preceded bySpy Wednesday and followed by Good Friday.[2]
The date is always between 19 March and 22 April inclusive, but these dates fall on different days depending on whether the Gregorian or Julian calendar is used liturgically. Eastern churches generally use the Julian calendar, and so celebrate this feast throughout the 21st century between 1 April and 5 May in the more commonly used Gregorian calendar. The liturgy held on the evening of Maundy Thursday initiates the Easter Triduum, the period which commemorates the passion, death, andresurrection of Christ; this period includes Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and ends on the evening ofEaster.[1][3] The mass or service of worship is normally celebrated in the evening, when Friday begins according to Jewish tradition, as the Last Supper was held on feast of Passover.[4]
