On Wednesday, 06/29/11, Jenk Uygur challenged Michele Bachmann to return the $421,000 she and her family have received as ‘federal welfare.’ Bachmann is known for railing against government programs that she feels are federal handouts. [Totals vary.]
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — As Rep. Michele Bachmann tours the country criticizing government as too big and too expensive, the Republican presidential candidate has come under mounting scrutiny over public dollars flowing to family business interests.
In Vietnam our soldiers had easy access to drugs and now it is easy to score heroin in Afghanistan, the supplier of 90% of the world’s heroin. I can imagine what it is like for a soldier in Afghanistan. Each day your life is on the line as you go from house to house looking for al-Qaeda and the Taliban. As you walk, your heart throbs with each step, fearful of I.E.D.’s which have taken limbs from so many. And, what do you do with down time? Incredible stress and unbearable boredom. Worry about family back home trying to live on the paltry salary we give our soldiers. A quick fix (pun intended) one or twice soon leads to addiction.
One part of our boys is there fighting and another guards our contractors who are building a new nation. President Obama will not tell you of the reality of our mission. While American infrastructure goes lacking unaffected by the stimulus, we are attempting to build a country with roads, schools, hospitals, etc. Afhanistan has never been a country. Our government borrows money so it can spend 2 billion dollars a week to wage war in Afghanistan. Current economies demand that we use our resources to grow the homeland and reduce our deficit. The VA helps our boys when they come home addicted to heroin, but, then, who helps them get jobs? As we draw down our forces in Afghanistan we will add to the 9.1% unemployment. Speaker Boehner promised that Republicans had a jobs plan. President Obama has a jobs plan…I think(?) Yet the unemployment rate is not coming down. It is wise to make the draw down in Afghanistan to happen in stages. Perhaps that will give us time to help our boys reclaim their lives and have a chance for a happy future.
Michele Bachmann announced for the US Presidency saying she had the same spirit as John Wayne calling him a patriot and having basic American values. Well, I found websites that flip that coin and paint Wayne as a racist who made popular movies in his day. Some who would give Wayne a pass and say that he was not politically correct and just said things that most white people said and felt in his day. Did Bachmann not “Google” John Wayne before championing his personal values? The actor, John Wayne, is not from Bachmann’s home town but, serial killer, John Wayne Gacy is! Bachmann apologized for saying that John Wayne was from her home town.
Also, I was surprised that Mike Wallace asked Michele if she is a “flake?” Readers of this blog know something about the outrageous and untrue statements of Rep. Bachmann. You have seen her pictures where she looks vacant or like a “deer in the headlights.” Bachmann is known for her serious belief in her statements but has yet to talk about her solutions to the problems of today. She will give Mitt Romney “a race for his money.” I hope that now Michele has announced, the media will hold her accountable and grill her on the questions and not accept her rhetoric. This has happened so many times (the latter). Just Sunday on “Face the Nation” she avoided defending subsidies her family gets from the federal government while at the same time saying she is a fiscal conservative and believer in small government. Small governments would not be giving subsidies to the highly profitable oil companies and huge tax breaks for the rich like the Bachmanns.
BACHMANN:Supports both a federal and state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and any legal equivalents.
CAIN: Opposes same-sex marriage and unions.
GINGRICH: Opposesdomestic partnership benefitsfor same-sex couples and same-sex adoptions but favors gays as teachers and favors the right of gays to leave their estates to their partners and visit them in the hospital.
“Legislation to legalize same-sex marriage in New York cleared the last major hurdle with a 33-to-29 vote in the state Senate, sending the bill to the governor’s desk for his expected approval. [Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law before midnight last night.]
A vote on the measure, which the state Assembly passed June 15, had been stalled in the Senate. But it turned a corner Friday, according to Senate Majority LeaderDean Skelos, after lawmakers agreed on an amendment pushed by Republicans to protect religious groups from potential litigation.
“From my assessment, it’s crunch time in those meetings,” Cantor told reporters. “We have hit the point at which we are at some really tough stuff. Big numbers, everything as I have said before is on the table except tax increases.”
GOP Leader in the House, Eric Cantor, turns a deaf ear to the patriotic duty for Rich Americans to participate in SHARED SACRIFICE in our financial pickle. Eric favors policies which favor the rich people in our country growing even richer and we, the poor and middle-class, sinking deeper into the pit of poverty. Even though he is Jewish, Eric should recognize that in this primarily christian nation, the right and good thing for the Republican party to do in this time of crisis, is to have the rich pay their pay share. Eric and John Boehner, Speaker of the House, blackmailed the President into an unholy compromise last Christmas giving the rich a huge windfall. Enough! Eric, John, reject Koch-Brothers-like campaign money and make real the noble responsibility of the jobs you hold. Don’t wait until the 11th hour to compromise on the 2012 Budget and raising the Debt Ceiling. That would be unseemly and would hurt the global economy. Does the Republican Party really want to be responsible for the collapse of the dollar and economies around the world who use us as a standard? The answer MUST be “No!” Just how strong are those chains that bind the Republican Party to the rich and therefore powerful? [GoodOleWoody]
News from The Hill:
Cantor pulls out of Biden debt talks By Erik Wasson
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) has announced that he is pulling out of bipartisan deficit talks being led by Vice President Joe Biden because Democrats continue to insist on tax increases in the talks.
WASHINGTON — The relationship between President Barack Obama and gay rights advocates appears to be thawing after two years of mutual distrust, in which each side was more likely to assail the other’s motivations than find room for collaboration. On Monday, the president’s reelection campaign formally announced that he would attend a high-profile LGBT gala in New York City on June 23. The event is set to be emceed by Neil Patrick Harris. It will also feature former Rep. Patrick Murphy D-Penn., chief sponsor of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Repeal legislation, as well as Joel Burns, the Fort Worth council member whose emotional plea to stop anti-gay bullying helped make the “It Gets Better” series viral. The event is expected to raise a nice chunk of change for the Obama Victory Fund 2012. [Sam Stein, “Huffington Post Politics”]
We spend $2 Billion every week in Afghanistan. George Bush started the fighting there in 2001. Where is all that money going? It is said that our mission now is nation building. What does that mean to the average American? The six o’clock news does cover the war in Afghanistan. The cable channels are not giving us the coverage they gave the war in Iraq? Why not? Is it because the media does not want to deal with how our money is involved in corruption in Afghanistan?
How about the extremist Taliban who fund themselves with trading in heroin? Is it true that there are only 50 Al Qaeda in Afghanistan? Bush started fighting there to root out Al Qaeda after 9/11. Is our money going for infrastructure? Schools? Housing? Agriculture? Salaries for our troops? We haven’t a clue. There is no transparency in the war in Afghanistan. The media is not embedded within the military to keep us informed. Where are the pictures and the video? Did President Bush and now President Obama have some plan to fight a quiet war for some unknown purpose?
I charge the media. They have failed us when it comes to Afghanistan. They have not shined a light on the war which has lasted over a decade. They prefer to cover sexy news like the Libyan conflict and the take down of Bin Laden. MSNBC and CNN have heroes in Libya who risk their lives to bring us daily news from the bombings. AFGHANISTAN: OUT OF SIGHT…OUT OF MIND!
Writers more talented than I can talk about Mitt Romney‘s flip-flops on important issues like Roe vs Wade. In the video above, Romney is asked how his Mormon religion would affect his decisions if he were President. The question is clearly made to him AND ROMNEY EVADES THE QUESTION. What is he hiding? Why won’t he talk about the Mormon Church? Why does he make a distinction between christians and mormons? Candidate Romney states in the video that he has “the love of the American people.” Huh? Come again, Mitt. How do you gauge that supposed love?
I look forward to seeing and hearing Romney justify making millions by doing what Gordon Gecko did in the movie “Wallstreet.” He bought companies, sold off their assets and fired the American people. He is reported to have $500 million dollars yet served chilli when he announced his candidacy for President. [It was not the lead story in the local papers…thanks to Sarah Palin whose hunger for celebrity sucked up all the oxygen in the state that day.]
