Shining a New Light on Chicken! I’ve Seen This for Real

Ever seen a chicken running around without its head? I have!
The latest news is that Congress will have acted by Saturday afternoon. 🙂 I’ll believe that when I see it!

That’s It!!! Time 4U to Call Congress, Now!!!

2012

The President spoke Monday night about the need for Congress to come together to meet our financial obligations by raising the so-called “debt ceiling” — that is, to make sure our country can pay the bills Congress has already racked up.

You’d think this would be fairly straightforward. For many years, regardless of party affiliation, presidents have asked Congress to do this when it’s been necessary — and every time, Congress has acted. Just as an example, Congress granted Ronald Reagan’s request to raise the debt ceiling 18 different times.

Here’s what’s happening: President Obama proposed the balanced approach of raising the debt ceiling paired with responsible steps to reduce our country’s long-term debt — asking oil companies, corporations, and the richest Americans to do their part rather than placing the entire burden on seniors and the middle class.

A deal has been close at times, but an ideological faction of House Republicans has been effectively holding our economy hostage — making extreme demands like ending Medicare as we know it, gutting Social Security, and rejecting any compromises that might make millionaires or big corporations pay their fair share to get our debt under control.

So when President Obama spoke to the nation the other night, he made a suggestion to everyone watching: Call Congress and ask them to do their job. Since then, there have been reports that the flood of calls and emails has been slowing down the phone systems and websites on Capitol Hill. But keep trying until you get through — they need to hear from you.

Call the Capitol switchboard to reach them at (202) 224-3121.

And House Speaker John Boehner — who is leading the Republicans in negotiations — could stand to hear what Americans like you think, too. His number is (202) 225-0600.

Call them now — and tell them we can’t afford to let politics hold our economy hostage. It’s time to put ideological demands aside and agree to a balanced approach. Then click here to let us know how it went.

Here’s what the President said on Monday:

“The American people may have voted for divided government, but they didn’t vote for a dysfunctional government. So I’m asking you all to make your voice heard. If you want a balanced approach to reducing the deficit, let your member of Congress know. If you believe we can solve this problem through compromise, send that message.”

The President doesn’t make a direct request of all of us like this very often. Take a minute right now to call your members of Congress — then let us know how it went:

President Obama, Pay Our Bills!

The Use of Immense Power Requires Great Deliberation

I wondered what The Constitution says about federal debt:

Section 4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. [Wikipedia]

In in our federal structure it is the Executive Branch that pays the bills authorized by The Congress. Without benefit of a degree in the study of the law, I deduce that it is the job of the President Obama and the Secretary of the Treasury to pay our bills in the situations where the Congress fails to pass a bill raising the Debt Ceiling.  The current financial crisis was manufactured by Republicans in The House to force political change by holding the Debt Ceiling hostage…pure blackmail. Heretofore the Debt Ceiling was raised as a matter of housekeeping to fulfill The Constitution.  Currently, Republicans in The Congress have seized upon an opportunity to blackmail the Executive Branch into signing a bill that furthers the aims and agenda of the Republican Party.

Founding Fathers

This is politics and is trumped by The Fourteenth Amendment, Section 4.  In the absence of action by The Legislative Branch, who authorized the debt, The Executive Branch, i.e., The President, must act to protect the “Full faith and credit of the United States.”  It cannot be that we lose our “AAA” bond rating. He must protect the world’s confidence in the United States paying its bills. After determining that The Congress will not or cannot act in time to avert a crisis(default), President Obama should use his Executive Power, invoke the Fourteenth Amendment and raise the Debt Ceiling. Yes, this would be a momentous use of power, but, a necessary one. President Obama hesitates to use this power which is based on an obscure part of The Constitution.  After due reflection, he must act. Of course all the opinions herein are mine only and the product of a humble bachelor of science degree.
