It wasn’t so long ago that we were in a depression. Millions of Americans were unemployed and after their savings were depleted they depended on charity to survive. Today our college graduates are unable to enter the job market with their fresh skills and knowledge. Now we have millions on Food Stamps. Gas prices are high and food keeps getting more expensive. Seniors are scared and afraid that one day the government benefit check may not come. There is no one to check the machinations of a television empire which masquerades as a news outlet when they really are the functional head of a conservative political party controlling through influence millions of campaign dollars from secret donors. The FCC and FEC look the other way. The US Supreme Court gave us Citizens United which has shifted overwhelming political power to the right. I can’t say we are not in a depression. The people are defeated. A call for 20,000 people to demonstrate at Wall Street went largely unfulfilled. [80 people were arrested.] While the rich grow richer each day protected and working in concert with a conservative party consisting of 1% of the population who are our employers sitting on 1 trillion dollars of capital instead of creating jobs. This time the Jews are not being persecuted as scapegoats and exterminated. This time it’s middle-class which is the focus of injustice, inequity and oppression. Conservative governors conspire in secret to turn the country more and more into an oligarchy. So many cold hearts lust for wealth. There still is food in the stores and the looting has not started. Our youth have not started mischief en masse like in the UK. The general public is too meek to give birth to a Tahrir Square. The news reports no secret political groups who seek to change the government through a little violence. BEWARE WHEN THE MEN START WEARING BROWN SHIRTS!
Jobs! We need jobs! Why not a domestic Marshall Plan or a WPA? President Obama has fashioned the American Jobs Act which contains many ideas previously approved by the opposition. He campaigns from coast to coast to get the public riled up to pressure The Congress to pass this bill. Some say the bill is naïve and will not be passed. No jobs? What do we do when the banks start limiting withdrawals and ATM machines are abandoned? How long will the shops have inventory on their shelves? Will some Americans start to think like they did in Germany in the 30s? Is there some dark and sinister monster lurking in innocent society waiting for his opportunity to overthrow the government…and one day perhaps the world? Is our military prepared for national rebellion at home like we saw in Egypt?
You know, life could be so different if only conservatives would see reason and work with progressives with both working on building that shining city on the hill. Compromise. It’s not a dirty word. It’s how our government served our best interests for 300 years. I fear that maybe those with all the money and power are done with democracy and want some extreme society. Is having a black President made the whites in power so insane that they are risking the demise of history’s greatest empire in their zeal for a white Commander-in-Chief? Would that be the answer to all our problems? What would happen the day after the election? Will the sun shine brighter? Will the grass be greener? Will there be jobs? Will everyone have an equal opportunity for a big slice of the American pie? Will the world heave a collective sigh of relief that America, the Golden Standard, is restored? Are we that foolish? Do we think it is too late to rescue our nation from the lobbyists and big campaign donors? The oligarchs? Are you content to sit on the sidelines and watch the world decline? If you are reading this rant, you have a computer. Have you used this civil weapon in the battle to fix our broken Congress? What I mean is this: Have you expressed your concerns and wishes to those you elected to represent you in Washington? Are you aware that omnipotent oligarchs could more the monster than that insane dictator of the 30s? Are you waiting for the breadlines and soup kitchens? You have got to do something! The Kennedy’s and Roosevelt’s are gone. Would that Dr. King were here to lead us! Well, it’s up to you. Will the middle-class sustain the attacks that would enslave us? Hey, they may have all the money, but the middle-class outnumbers them a hundred times over. We can win! How about it?
