We cannot forget the mid-term election in 2010 which brought the various Tea Parties to power. They won elections which put legislators in The Senate and The House. There are so many in The House that they have what is called a “Freshman Class.” This Class started the 112th Congress along with new Republican leaders in The House: Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) as Speaker of The House and Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) as Majority Leader of the House. Speaker Boehner started his tenure saying that The House would make jobs a priority for Republicans…and Blog has kept wondering where are the jobs Boehner should have created by now. The jobs issue was eclipsed in our consciousness by this clip from Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) of The Senate who serves to his dismay as Minority Leader:
I have marveled in this blog how closely Republicans having been working to achieve this goal announced by Leader McConnell. They started before the New Year. At Christmas of 2010 The President was pushed into a corner by Republicans (especially the Tea Party Class in The House). Working together three Republicans threatened the President and the entire nation with a shutdown of government if the President continued to pursue raising taxes on the top 1% of the population, a/k/a. the rich people and most profitable corporations. Mitch McConnell, John Boehner and Eric Cantor refused efforts to reach a compromise. Speaker Boehner would not even utter that word. At the 11th hour The President was offered an extension of unemployment benefits for thousands of workers in exchange for an unearned tax windfall for the top 1%. Santa was able to come to more houses in 2010 because of this. I can remember no Congress putting a President in this uncomfortable position.
Months later, these same Republican leaders refused to reach a compromise on a continuing resolution to keep the government open. They sought to make President Obama seem weak and ineffectual. This was highlighted by Standard and Poors lowered our “AAA” Credit Rating which white Presidents had enjoyed for 70 years. These same Republicans are frequently seen on TV discussing their assessment of how the President is doing his job…or not. In my mind they seem to want to be co-President with Obama. They constantly give the impression that they could run the Whitehouse better than Barack Obama. [If only he would do things their way.]
President Obama announced the American Jobs Act which will create thousands of jobs, if not more. He had the gall to ask The Congress to pass his entire package. Eric Cantor went on television and declared the President’s package “dead on arrival.” (DOA) Yet, as early as Thursday morning, Rep. Kevin McCarty, (R-CA) who said he’d only been in The Congress 3 years, feigned naïveté and said that he has witnessed Republican compromising with the President and getting along with him. McCarthy was called out by Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, hosts of “MorningJoe” (MSNBC). Contributor Mike Barnicle and guest, Jonathan Capehart joined in recalling vivid memories that contradicted McCarthy’s account.
The American people know the truth of this sad relationship. Why just the other day, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) spoke in the Senate, not to introduce a jobs bill of his own but to criticize the President’s going to people to get help with his jobs plan and, worse, to slam him with using a “Canadian bus” for the tour. [Only the bus frame is Canadian.] Silliness, but it is more piling on of abuse suffered by our President which started with Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) calling the President a liar during a State of the Union Address. No white President has suffered this indignity.
The emergence of Occupy Wall Street demonstrates the dissatisfaction of the American people (the 99%) with our government, our financial system and our political morass. I hope the American people see the real motives and scheming going on with Republicans from coast to coast. As many of us that can, join the growing protests. Call, email or visit your legislators’ offices and express yourself. Tell them you want your country back!
