Latino vote may top 12 million in 2012 Posted by CNN Senior Producer Rose Arce

(CNN) – The voting population of Latinos has exploded to the point where Latinos will not only be a decisive force in the presidential election, but will likely affect the outcome of political contests from school boards and statehouses to Congress, according a new report by the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials.

Latino voter enthusiasm is up,” said Arturo Vargas, executive director of NALEO. A recent poll by ImpreMedia-Latino Decisions confirms that analysis, counting three quarters of Latino voters as actively engaged in the election with 14% of all Latinos saying they are actively working on getting out the vote.

The number of registered Latinos has increased by 26% in the last four years to 12.2 million or 8.7% of all voters. A new potential Latino voter turns 18 every 30 seconds. Already, one of four U.S. citizens under the age of 18 is Latino, including 48% of the youth population of Texas, Vargas said, but low voter registration among young people and new voter ID laws could dampen turnout.

Obama touts Powell’s endorsement before Virginia crowd

By NBC’s Ali Weinberg

NBC NEWS

RICHMOND, VAPresident Barack Obama touted the endorsement of former Secretary of State and retired Gen. Colin Powell’s endorsement, suggesting it was a nod of support to his record on foreign policy and defense.

Addressing a crowd of 15,000 here at a public park, Obama said, “I was proud to learn that we have Colin Powell’s support in this campaign.”

“I’m grateful to him for his lifetime of service to his country both as a soldier and a diplomat. And every brave American who wears this uniform of this country should know that as long as I am your Commander in Chief, we will sustain the strongest military this world has ever known.

“We will be relentless in pursuit of our enemies. Those are promises I’ve kept.”

Military spending is a key issue in swing state Virginia, home to several bases as well as many civilian defense employees, who live primarily in Northern Virginia.

“President Obama says that ‘trust matters,’ but Virginians already know that he cannot be trusted to protect our military or our economy. Under President Obama, our military stands to be cut by nearly $1 trillion and he has no plan whatsoever to save the 136,000 Virginia jobs that could be eliminated because of his cuts,” said Curt Cashour, Romney’s spokesman for Virginia. “To make matters worse, the president’s liberal policies are killing jobs in Virginia as we speak.”

After his speech, the president was headed to Chicago where he would become the first sitting president to vote early in person.

MICHELLE OBAMA ‘GETS OUT THE VOTE’

Michelle Obama joined the set of US television talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday night as part of a final drive to mobilise voters ahead of election day on Nov 6.

The First Lady appeared in a sketch in which she crept up on a snoozing Jimmy Kimmel with an air horn and chased him out of his bedroom so he would not be late to the polls.

“Get out! Go vote!” she shouts as he flees the room.

“And eat some carrots!” she calls after him in a reference to her campaign to promote healthy eating.

Back in the studio, Mrs Obama encouraged voters to take advantage of early voting whether or not they support the President.
