Esther Walker – I Don’t-Want Nobody But You (1927)

I guess you are fit to be tied after hearing today’s news on profits for the oil industry‘s first quarter.  Many of us are paying $4/gal for gasoline to fill our cars. It just seems obscene, perverse and unjust all at once.  Especially when you add the millions we give these profiteers as OIL SUBSIDIES.  I was so moved that I wrote this email to the President and my federal elected representatives:

April 27, 2011

[recipient address was inserted here]

[recipient name was inserted here],

We are in challenging economic times.  The American people can no longer
look the other way and ignore veiled winks of the eye as we pay billions
of taxpayer dollars to oil companies in the form of subsidies while at the
same time they have the largest profits in recent memory.

Please use your vote and influence to END OIL SUBSIDIES. Your country will
appreciate your honest service and duty.

Feel free to use this text, modify it and send it to your elected federal representatives.

Do those in the DC beltway care about our everyday struggles to stretch a dollar?  We have to pay for transportation to work. Then we have to decide between food, medication and cleaning our clothes we wear to work, etc.  “We” are the lower 98% of the population.  I have pointed out here how the great divide between the “haves and the have-nots” widens each day.  Can you imagine living in the miserable world that Paul Ryan and his republican brothers would visit upon us?  If you do nothing, don’t complain when miserable goes from concept to reality. I have to go down trying.

Damn the Filibuster…or Not

Well, this is a short day for many. As you share you coffee break or “gather around the water cooler,” don’t forget to discuss the wisdom of changing Senate rules relative to the filibuster and secret holds.  Remind your friends that every attempt at passing a bill in the US Senate was held up by REPUBLICANS through the filibuster. OVER 80 TIMES!  The shortage of federal judges is due to their use of the filibuster.  On the first day of the new Congress the Senate can vote to “change the rules.”  With the REPUBLICANS administratively in charge of the House, would it be a good idea to limit or change somehow the filibuster?  And what about the immoral practice of secret holds on bills? Yes, Senators can put a hold from consideration on bills without telling us who did it. IMHO, this must be done away with!  The people have a right to know.

Have you contacted your US Senator yet to express your opinion?

“Obama brings in grassroots team to cut deal on fiscal cliff”

Barack Obama has enlisted the help of his formidable grassroots army of volunteers in the battle with Republican members of Congress over thefiscal cliff, the January 1 deadline for a deal on tax and spending.

The Obama for America campaign team, which has remained intact post-election, sent out a message to supporters saying that though there is a lot of stake, with their help a deal is possible.

It comes after reports of no progress by the Republican and Democratic teams left behind in Congress over the Thanksgiving holiday period to start work on a compromise package.

The White House move suggests it has learned the lesson about the impact of grassroots opinion from the battle over healthcare reform. At that time, Democrats failed to match Republican and Tea Party groups who piled the pressure on Congress through the mail, in town hall meetings and in protests on Capitol Hill.

The Obama campaign team, in an email to its extensive network of supporters, said: “Right now, president Obama is working with leaders of both parties in Washington to reduce the deficit in a balanced way so we can lay the foundation for long-term middle-class job growth and prevent your taxes from going up.”

It calls on them to spread the word about Obama’s position to friends, families and neighbours. It said he wanted a balanced budget that will extend tax cuts for 98% of the population, eliminate tax cuts for the wealthiest and cut spending by $3tn.

“These problems are challenging, but they’re solvable. In fact, the Senate has already passed a bill to keep your taxes low. The House needs to pass it, and Congress should get it to the president as soon as possible,” the OFA mail said.

Join me as I “shine a light” on Senator Mitch McConnell from Kentucky

The sour senator above is Mitch McConnell.  He is minority leader in the Senate and he has used the filibuster over 300 times to block Senator Harry Reid who is Majority Leader of the Senate.  It is Harry who should be making news as he guides legislation through that body and into law. Mitch McConnell failed decisively in his personal and party war on Barack Obama.  Although the President won the election, Mitch labors on unchanged.

Mitch McConnell runs for re-election in 2014 and may be opposed by activist Ashley Judd.  Please urge her to run.  In the meantime, join me as I shine a light on Mitch McConnell to keep everyone abreast of  Mitch’s bad behavior and encourage them to fight the continued use of the filibuster in the Senate.  You can click the link on the menu above or click HERE to read my latest newspaper, “Shining a Light on Mitch McConnell.”  PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO GET A DAILY COPY IN YOUR INBOX.  THANKS!
