The United States will deploy additional ground-based missile interceptors as part of efforts to enhance the nation’s ability to defend itself from attack by North Korea or Iran, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced Friday.

Still relatively new in his post, the Pentagon chief told reporters that 14 additional interceptors would bring the total to 44. He said the expansion should be completed by 2017.

Part of the move would involve reopening a missile field at Fort Greely, Alaska, Hagel said.

At the conclusion of 1984, George Orwell devoted 12 pages to the principles of Newspeak, a language and a vocabulary designed to prevent thoughts considered dangerous by the regime of Big Brother. If there were no words to express a thought, then the masses could not hold those thoughts. Orwell predicted that full implementation of Newspeak would occur by 2050. We will reach the halfway point between 1984 and 2050 in just four years, in 2017. The Republican Party has their own version of Newspeak which I call GOPspeak.

The first instance of GOPspeak that I can remember specifically was Richard Nixon’s “I am not a crook” speech. Of course, he was a crook and worse and was forced to resign not long after his vice-president, Spiro Agnew, was forced to resign for similar reasons. First time in our history that occurred.

The tax plan embedded in the House Republican budget would cut taxes by $5.7 trillion over the next decade, with the benefits flowing disproportionately to very wealthy households, according to a new analysis by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

Taxpayers earning more than $1 million a year would benefit the most from the GOP tax plan, the analysis shows, reaping an average $400,000 tax break that would send their after-tax income soaring by nearly 20 percent.
