Subject: Send a letter: Do Your Job!
I wrote a letter for the AFT letter campaign “Do Your Job!”
Before the flags were lowered to half-mast to honor Justice Scalia, Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans had drawn a line in the sand, saying they would not even hold hearings for any Supreme Court justice nominated by President Obama in his last year in office. It’s as pathetic as it is hypocritical. Confirmations are part of the job, and GOP senators swore to the American people they represent that they would do their jobs. GOP senators are saying we should wait until the people elect a new president, but the Constitution doesn’t say the president should stop working in his fourth year in office and neither should the Senate—just as it confirmed Justice Kennedy in President Reagan’s final year. We don’t get to pick and choose the parts of our jobs we do, and the Senate can’t either. Write to your senators today.
