Email Congress, Demonstrate….DO SOMETHING!

THIS BLOG IS CONSTANTLY URGING YOU TO EMAIL, CALL, WRITE OR VISIT YOUR CONGRESSMEN.  SOME ACTIVISTS IN NEW YORK CITY HAVE DONE MUCH MORE WITH A DEMONSTRATION.  THEY ARE TRYING TO GET 20,000 PEOPLE OCCUPY WALL STREET TO PROTEST CONGRESS DOING NOTHING ABOUT THE SORRY FINANCIAL STATE THIS NATION IS IN.

The youth of America are growing more and more concerned about the mess our leaders have made of this country.  The promise of obtaining the American Dream is nothing but a pipe dream to some.  We should all be as riled up and angry as Elizabeth Warren in Massachusetts who is running for senator against heavily Wall Street funded Scott Brown who sits as successor to Sen. Teddy Kennedy.  See and hear the passion that every American should have if we are going to change this b*tch! [current situation] 🙂

CONGRESS SHOULD GET A “D-“ 1

Look at the bustling chamber above. It looks like a lot of the people’s work is being done. Phooey! This photo must be staged.  Turn on C-Span and watch The Senate and The House as they really are: EMPTY save a few legislators who have come to work that day to get their particular issue on the official record.  The 112th Congress has been alive for 9 months, yet The Senate has only been in session 121 days and The House 125 days. Incredible!  I know they have to spend a lot of time fundraising for re-election, but, we are paying them to do work!  The Senate is not living up to this history capsule and deserves a “D-” rating:

U.S. Senate History
The United States Senate is often described as the world’s greatest deliberative body. Many of the most influential political leaders in U.S. history have served there. A total of fifteen senators later became President. Forteen incumbent senators were nominated for President. Twenty-two senators later served as Vice President. Twenty-seven incumbent senators were nominated for Vice President. Nearly one hundred senators later governed their respective states.

Nine governors even resigned in order to serve in the Senate. So did Vice President John C. Calhoun. The ranks of the Senate are frequently sought out to fill cabinet posts, ambassadorial appointments and even the Supreme Court [source]

  • Could it be that the staff do all of the actual work and the men and women we stand in long lines to elect are just figureheads? Spokesmen?  Someone to make “arrangements” with the myriad of lobbyists?  We never see Harry Reid on TV and he is supposed to be running The Senate for the Democrats who are in charge. On the other hand, you can’t keep The Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell off television.  He is the poor Johnny-One-Note whose repeats the Republican mission “to make President Obama a one term President.” (Yes, Michele Bachmann uses that refrain, also.)  In his appearances on TV Mitch does not come forth with new ideas and legislation.  He just spouts boring rhetoric.  The Republicans run The House and their leaders John Boehner and Eric Cantor are on TV a lot detracting from the Presidents intiatives to get the country going. In both houses Republicans stubbornly oppose the President at every turn to make him seem weak and ineffectual. It must be said here that Boehner and Cantor are controlled by their freshman elected from various Tea Parties.  However, on camera the Speaker and the GOP Leader act like they are making the decisions and wielding the power.

Before taking the weekend off, Republicans set up another possible shutdown of the government on Friday, September 30.  Hopefully, when they return on Monday they will be reasonable and fund the government for a decent amount of time.  Speaking of money, do you know how much we pay them?

Majority Party Leader – $193,400
Minority Party Leader – $193,400
Speaker of the House – $223,500
Majority Leader – $193,400
Minority Leader – $193,400

Wow!  Nice work, if you can get it!  Of course, they have to raise much more than that to win re-election.  I hope you have been watching Dylan Ratigan’s reports on why we need to take money out of our politics.  In a partisan decision the Supreme Court lit a match to the pyrotechnics which are our political system. [Citizens United]  People, we will not get campaign reform unless we dmand it! Congress works to preserve itself as the status quo. Our war in Korea is still going on because we have not demanded a cessation. Likewise in Iraq and Afghanistan.  These conflicts give our generals something to do, but, hurt the nation.  You really need to write to Congress.

Well, to sum up, Congress gets paid a big bundle of money, spend almost no time in their legislative chambers, do not engage in debate but give speeches to an empty room, do not account for their work hours and get benefits and allowance that are not a part of this post.  Surely, the Senate can no longer say it is the world’s greatest deliberative body.  We need issues of the day debated like they do in the English Parliament.  Then we would see which of our legislators really know the issues and are effective in getting laws enacted.  It’s all up to you. Do nothing and you get the government you deserve.

HEY, CONGRESS…PASS THE BILL!

Friend —

It’s downright shameful.

Following months of empty rhetoric and Tea Party pandering, Speaker Boehner and Republican leaders in Congress are doing everything they can to stop progress on putting Americans back to work. Now, they are bringing our government to the brink of shutdown in a brazen ploy to advance their extremist agenda.

That’s right. Republicans are actually trying to sabotage the economy in a cynical ploy to score political points by hurting President Obama and Democrats in Congress.

Enough is enough. With America’s working families struggling to make ends meet, now is not the time for games.

Call out Speaker Boehner: Co-sign our petition calling Republicans to support President Obama’s plan to put America back to work >>

Two weeks ago, President Obama outlined his American Jobs Act and told Congress to “pass this bill” immediately. But instead of getting to work, Boehner and House Republicans are doing everything they can to smear, stall, and obstruct this crucial piece of legislation.

Instead, Republicans are threatening to shut down the government and hold up critically needed disaster funding in a ploy to destroy even more jobs.

We need to put as much pressure as possible on Boehner and Republicans in the House to support the American Jobs Act. With your support, we can show them with sheer numbers that Americans support this bill and Republicans will suffer at the polls if they don’t support it.

Speaker Boehner: Pass This Bill! Co-sign our petition telling Republicans to support this vital jobs bill >>

Thanks for acting fast,

Taryn

THIS WEEK…OUR GREATEST FEAR…AND THEIRS

GEORGE “W”. YOU REMEMBER GEORGE, DONTCHA?

INNOCENT PROJECT: “Eyewitness Identification.” PHOOEY! [sic]

“Eyewitness Identification

Barry Scheck, Co-Director, Innocence Project

The most common element in all wrongful convictions later overturned by DNA evidence has been eyewitness misidentification. Misleading lineup methods have been used for decades without serious scrutiny. Now is the time for change.

Despite solid proof of the inaccuracy of traditional methods – and the availability of simple measures to reform them – eyewitness IDs remain among the most common and compelling evidence brought against criminal defendants.

Misidentifications don’t only threaten the innocent, they also derail investigations. While police focus on finding evidence against an innocent person, the perpetrator can get away.

How the wrong person gets picked
Most law enforcement agencies use the same methods they have used for decades – live and photo lineups, usually conducted without a blind administrator or proper instructions. It is stressful for victims and eyewitnesses to identify a perpetrator, and they make mistakes.

Sometimes these mistakes are triggered by a gap in memory or the desire to make an identification at all costs. In other cases, subtle cues by police – intentional or not – lead to a false identification. Almost all of these mistakes are preventable.” [SOURCE: Innocence Project.]

LAST NIGHT the State of Georgia executed Troy Davis even though 7 of 9 eyewitnesses recanted their original testimony.  The ballistics were questionable and there was no gun with incriminating fingerprints.  To the casual observer

TROY DAVIS R.I.P.

there was more than a mole hill of REASONABLE DOUBT!  Nevertheless, the Georgia State Supreme Court refused to see what was so clear to so many.  The execution was delayed in vain. No white knight came riding on a white horse:  The US Supreme Court, one’s last resort, refused to act in the name of justice for Troy Davis.  He died blessing his executioners and declaring his innocence one last time.
Let this injustice be not in vain.  DONATE to the Innocence Project to help free the death row innocent.
