Will we be forced to watch this “movie”…again, Mitch McConnell?

Sen. Mitch McConnell and President Obama

Disaster Looms in the Arctic. Pitch in and sign a protest to Barack Obama.

Shell Oil is supposed to start drilling in the Polar Bear Seas of America’s Arctic in a matter of weeks.

But over the last two weeks, Shell has fessed up that they can’t meet the air pollution reductions they agreed to, the Coast Guard found Shell’s clean-up barge inadequate, and this weekend a Shell drill ship came dangerously close to running aground on its way to the Arctic.

Tell the Obama administration not to ignore such obvious warning signs. It’s more apparent than ever that we can’t trust Shell to drill safely in the Polar Bear Seas.

Shell has been trying for months to get approval to drill in the Arctic this summer. To get the permits, Shell made promises about the kinds of equipment they would use to reduce air pollution and clean up a potential spill. But now, with just a few days left before they want to start drilling, they’ve admitted that their equipment isn’t up to par – and they have no way to fix it before they start drilling.

We’ve been telling the Obama administration for months that Shell can’t be trusted in the Arctic. The administration needs to hear your voice now more than ever.

Just this weekend, a Shell drill ship headed to the Polar Bear Seas almost ran aground while moored in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. 35 mph winds pushed the vessel within feet of the shore. What would happen if the ship met the gale-force winds and 25-foot waves of the Polar Bear Seas?

Shell is still trying to convince government agencies that what they have is good enough, even though it’s not what they agreed on – and it’s clear that Shell is not ready for a disaster. Shell wants us to trust them.

Do you trust Shell? Me neither. And the Obama administration shouldn’t either.

Tell the Obama administration that we can’t afford to just trust Shell.

Thank you for everything you do for our environment,

Dan Ritzman
Sierra Club Arctic Campaign Director

Huge Profits, Tax Subsidies Don’t Change Pepco Response After Storm

“Heavy storms…knocked out electricity for millions of Americans across the mid-Atlantic, including hundreds of thousands of residents of the District of Columbia. Pepco, the utility corporation that has a monopoly over electric services in the D.C…Pepco is a popular target for discontent in D.C., and for good reason. In the last few years, the company has cut service and maintenance, even while it made millions in profits and paid its executives fat bonuses…Adding insult to injury, according to Citizens for Tax Justice, Pepco has not paid any net federal corporate income tax for the last decade…”.* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

CARTOON 1: The New “Ugly American”

Obama Bus Tour: Wrap Day One

The President is conducting a two-state bus tour to Ohio and Pennsylvania.  He offers his positive vision for the next four years if we re-elect him.  He is shadowed by Bobby Jindal and Tim Pawlenty who are both surrogates for Mitt Romney and rumored candidates for vice president in a Romney administration. Like Mitt Romney, Jindal and Pawlenty criticize Obama with rhetoric but offer no Republican solutions to our problems.  There can be only one choice in November: RE-ELECT BARACK OBAMA!

was the largest New Deal agency, employing millions to carry out public
projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads, and operated large arts, drama, media, and literacy projects. It fed children and redistributed food, clothing, and housing. Almost every community in the United States had a park, bridge or school constructed by the agency, which especially benefited rural and Western populations. Expenditures from 1936 to 1939 totaled nearly $7 billion.[1] By 1943, the total amount spent was over 11 billion.[2]
Created by order of President FranklinDelano Roosevelt, the WPA was funded
by Congress with passage of the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act of 1935 on April 8, 1935. The legislation had passed in the House of Representatives by a margin of 329 to 78, but was delayed by the Senate.[1] The WPA continued and extended relief programs similar to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC), which was established by Congress in 1932 during the administration of Roosevelt’s predecessor Herbert Hoover. Headed by Harry Hopkins, the WPA provided jobs and income to the unemployed during the Great Depression in the United States. Between 1935 and 1943, the WPA provided almost eight
million jobs.[3] Until ended by Congress and war employment during 1943, the WPA was the largest employer in the country. Most people who needed a job were eligible for at least some of its jobs.[4] Hourly wages were the prevailing wages in each area;the rules said workers could not work more than 30 hours a week, but many projects included months in the field, with workers eating and sleeping on
worksites. Before 1940, there was some training involved to teach new skills
and the project’s original legislation had a strong emphasis on training.” [Source: Wikipedia]
Mr. President: I am simple senior citizen. I know you are having a hard time trying to solve our problems with a major focus on jobs. The WPA was before my time, but, I have read about it on the INTERNET. It was a large program created by the President at the time through EXECUTIVE ORDER. You have that power…to create a NEW WPA and create millions of jobs in this country to finally do something about the infrastructure and to give the nation a re-birth.  It would be very complicated to do it now, I suppose. And, growing the government like this would be fought by republicans.  Perhaps something like the WPA is doable. Please take a moment to view my video. I am just frustrated when I see the daily reports on unemployment and the economy.  I just know that through the WPA people who wanted a job had a job.  I am sure you will have some grand design in your next State of the Union address.  I look forward to that.  God bless you and God bless America!
