If Not For Trade Unions…

I Shouldda Had a Trade Union!

A trade union (British English) or labor union (American English) is an organization of workers that have banded together to achieve common goals such as better working conditions. The trade union, through its leadership, bargains with the employer on behalf of union members (rank and file members) and negotiates labour contracts (collective bargaining) with employers. This may include the negotiation of wages, work rules, complaint procedures, rules governing hiring, firing and promotion of workers, benefits, workplace safety and policies. The agreements negotiated by the union leaders are binding on the rank and file members and the employer and in some cases on other non-member workers.
Originating in Europe, trade unions became popular in many countries during the Industrial Revolution, when the lack of skill necessary to perform most jobs shifted employment bargaining power almost completely to the employers’ side, causing many workers to be mistreated and underpaid. Trade union organisations may be composed of individual workers, professionals, past workers, or the unemployed. The most common, but by no means only, purpose of these organisations is “maintaining or improving the conditions of their employment”.[Source: Wikipedia]

Billionaire Koch Brothers, Puppeteers in Wisconsin

Say, have you been keeping up with the pro-union rally in Madison, Wisconsin?  Did you hear about the fake phone call to the Governor?  A fake David Koch called Governor Scott Walker and revealed who is pulling the strings in Wisconsin.  The call was recorded and has made the national news. Look for it.  The call ended with an exchange that might lead to a legal investigation.

Congress: Women: No Bag of Bones!

Artist: Lauren Prax

I have been around women all my life.  My mother was a woman. 🙂  Seriously, it is a shame that our legislators regard women as a comely bag of bones, a marionette, subject to their laws, approval and acquiescence. [Their overwhelming majority are men.]  Congress feels it is their province to enact laws regulating a women’s reproductive miracle.  Sure, the pure health of our women is a matter for public concern.  But this constant conversation and stupid action about abortion and rape is trying on the national conscious.  Women should have greater say-so over their bodies and health and we need to make definitions permanent and laws final.  Witness the current attempt to re-define rape as having to include force.  What about marital rape where the woman is unable to defend her rights? Would you want your father raping your mother…like mine did?

No! Planned Parenthood is not evil! No public service is perfect.

Whether you are a teen, a man, a woman or a senior citizen, there is a responsibility and need for all of us to participate in the national dialogue about our health.  Let your those who make our laws know your opinion.

I found this interesting ant-abortion video aimed at the black community:

The subject of women’s health, especially reproductive health is subject with incalculable gravitas.  Read up on the subject and add your opinion to the dialogue.

“MorningJoe” Supports Koch Bros.? 1

Silent Billionaire Bankers of the Republican Agenda

Joe Scarborough on “MorningJoe” (MSNBC) cut off discussion of the obscene contributions of the Koch brothers (GOP).Rachel Maddow reports that of the top 10 campaign contributors in 2010, 7 were REPUBLICAN and 3 were DEMOCRAT…THANKS TO THE US SUPREME COURT! The 3 demcratic groups were UNIONS! Using Koch money republican governors have planned and are trying to take away the only major contributors democrats have. Then republicans can pay for and win all elections! Then the billionaire Koch brothers will have won! I never thought growing up that the American government could be bought. I wonder if grassroots republicans are aware of the true agenda of their party. THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS THE ONLY PARTY WHICH PROMOTES THE RIGHTS AND WELL-BEING OF THE PEOPLE. BIG BUSINESS, CORPORATE AMERICA INVESTS IT’S MONEY IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. If the american people don’t rise up and take off the oppressive shackles of the ruling class, OUR COUNTRY IS DOOMED!!!

“Gov. Haley Barbour (R-MS), a potential presidential candidate, appears to have marked a line in the sand for an expected presidential run sure to be dogged by the politics of race and the legacy of the Civil Rights Era in his state. Asked by reporters today in Jackson, Mississippi, Barbour not only refused to denounce efforts by some to create a license plate honoring Confederate general and Ku Klux Klan founder Nathan Bedford Forrest. He said he was out of the denouncing business altogether.

“I don’t go around denouncing people,” said Barbour, the Jackson Clarion-Ledger reports. “That’s not going to happen. I don’t even denounce the news media.”

Barbour also added: “I know there’s not a chance it’ll become law.”

Forrest was a slave trader before the Civil War, who became known during the war for his significant innovations in military strategy — and also, the paper notes, for leading a massacre of captured black Union troops at Fort Pillow, Tennessee. He founded the Ku Klux Klan after the war, but later left the organization.” [Source:Eric Kleefeld | February 15, 2011, TPMDC]

We know of the KKK’s infamous history and purpose during the Civil Rights Movement. It has been around a long time.

Rumsfeld Endorses DADT Repeal

Shortly after his CPAC appearance, former defense secretary Donald “War Criminal” Rumsfeld endorsed the repeal of DADT.

“First of all, we know that gays and lesbians have been serving in the military for decades with honorable service,” Rumsfeld said. “We know that [repeal of a ban on gays serving openly] is an idea whose time has come.” Rumsfeld says he has “enormous respect” for the ground commanders and service chiefs who have expressed concerns about the impact of gays serving openly on unit cohesion, and he urged the top brass to implement the new law “with care.” But Rumsfeld says that congress, which passed the repeal bill in the waning days of the last session, has expressed the will of the American people.

RAISING RETIREMENT AGE? 2

So many suggest that to help fix Social Security, we need to raise the retirement age. Really?  When I was working (in my 20s and 30s) I noticed that the older guys were not the most productive workers.  They were given “special” workplans.  They were relieved when they could retire at 65. Yes, some white-collar workers could work longer, but, many blue-collar workers would find it difficult to work to 70 and 75 doing physical work.  In either case, IMHO, employers look at you differently when you pass 50.  Who’s going to put an older worker on a fast track for promotion?  Doesn’t happen often.

When I check out at the Food Lion, I notice that the cashier has gray hair. I want to ask her age out of curiosity.  My hair is still black but I cannot stand at a cash register all day and check out groceries while keeping mentally alert on the prices on the register. It’s easier these days because the IBM system “scans” the food for the price.

No, raising the retirement age might look good on a spreadsheet, but, what about the reality of a 60 or 70-year-old worker?  I am so glad I was able to retire at 53!

Obstacle to Deficit Cutting: A Nation on Entitlements – WSJ.com

Sunday, on “Meet the Press,” Speaker John Boehner formally announced that the United States is “broke.”  This bold reality led me to read an article I had been saving for the right time:

WSJ.com:
By SARA MURRAY Efforts to tame America’s ballooning budget deficit could soon confront a daunting reality: Nearly half of all Americans live in a household in which someone receives government benefits, more than at any time in history. At the same time, the fraction of American households not paying federal income taxes has also grown—to an estimated 45% in 2010, from 39% five years ago, according to the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan research organization.

via Obstacle to Deficit Cutting: A Nation on Entitlements – WSJ.com. [Great article!]

Personally, I paid Federal Income Tax and the Payroll tax from 1969 to 1992. I have earned the entitlements promised to me.  If Congress wants to alter the system, they should do it with young wage earners early in their careers so that they have a chance to prepare for their retirements. Admittedly, I was not smart enough to understand stocks, margin calls, buying short, nor derivatives. I depended on earning a pension and the promise of Social Security. I think it ludicrous to think that even in the 21st Century, most Americans can swim in the sea of stock and bond and derivatives which might constitute a “savings plan for retirement.”

Artist: Kevin Spear

If I had lived and worked under such a system, I would be homeless on the streets of New York…lost! Without hope! No, I am pretty sophisticated…not smart on investing money.  Are you?  Would you trust the futures of your innocent young children to the vicissitudes and vagaries of Wall Street, the Stock Market and investments in general?  Do you really think that under such a system for 40 years they will be provided for without “The Government?” I submit, “No!”

Yes, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are not perfect systems.  They were devised to patch holes in our social fabric at a time in our past.  Congress has been talking about fixing these systems for decades. Yet, we read today the referenced article in the Wall Street Journal.  We keep voting these old men into Congress who don’t know how or are unwilling to perfect these systems as much as a human can do!  Last November, the election brought a crop of young members of The Congress. Perhaps they will take up the gauntlet and fix these systems and secure a safe and comfortable future for us all.  That success depends, in part, on how much you get involved in governance. Your responsibility is an easy one: Write to your US Senators and US Representatives and express your opinions and concerns.  If they will not listen, VOTE THEM OUT! [You might begin by requesting they immediately end the two (2) wars we are waging.  That would fix our deficit problem, IMHO.]

. . weirdo Democrats? At the end of the story, good vanquishes evil, everybody gets exactly what they need, and the President arrives back home, safe and sound. Touche, sir.
