That’s It!!! Time 4U to Call Congress, Now!!! 4

2012

The President spoke Monday night about the need for Congress to come together to meet our financial obligations by raising the so-called “debt ceiling” — that is, to make sure our country can pay the bills Congress has already racked up.

You’d think this would be fairly straightforward. For many years, regardless of party affiliation, presidents have asked Congress to do this when it’s been necessary — and every time, Congress has acted. Just as an example, Congress granted Ronald Reagan’s request to raise the debt ceiling 18 different times.

Here’s what’s happening: President Obama proposed the balanced approach of raising the debt ceiling paired with responsible steps to reduce our country’s long-term debt — asking oil companies, corporations, and the richest Americans to do their part rather than placing the entire burden on seniors and the middle class.

A deal has been close at times, but an ideological faction of House Republicans has been effectively holding our economy hostage — making extreme demands like ending Medicare as we know it, gutting Social Security, and rejecting any compromises that might make millionaires or big corporations pay their fair share to get our debt under control.

So when President Obama spoke to the nation the other night, he made a suggestion to everyone watching: Call Congress and ask them to do their job. Since then, there have been reports that the flood of calls and emails has been slowing down the phone systems and websites on Capitol Hill. But keep trying until you get through — they need to hear from you.

Call the Capitol switchboard to reach them at (202) 224-3121.

And House Speaker John Boehner — who is leading the Republicans in negotiations — could stand to hear what Americans like you think, too. His number is (202) 225-0600.

Call them now — and tell them we can’t afford to let politics hold our economy hostage. It’s time to put ideological demands aside and agree to a balanced approach. Then click here to let us know how it went.

Here’s what the President said on Monday:

“The American people may have voted for divided government, but they didn’t vote for a dysfunctional government. So I’m asking you all to make your voice heard. If you want a balanced approach to reducing the deficit, let your member of Congress know. If you believe we can solve this problem through compromise, send that message.”

The President doesn’t make a direct request of all of us like this very often. Take a minute right now to call your members of Congress — then let us know how it went:

President Obama, Pay Our Bills! 1

The Use of Immense Power Requires Great Deliberation

I wondered what The Constitution says about federal debt:

Section 4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. [Wikipedia]

In in our federal structure it is the Executive Branch that pays the bills authorized by The Congress. Without benefit of a degree in the study of the law, I deduce that it is the job of the President Obama and the Secretary of the Treasury to pay our bills in the situations where the Congress fails to pass a bill raising the Debt Ceiling.  The current financial crisis was manufactured by Republicans in The House to force political change by holding the Debt Ceiling hostage…pure blackmail. Heretofore the Debt Ceiling was raised as a matter of housekeeping to fulfill The Constitution.  Currently, Republicans in The Congress have seized upon an opportunity to blackmail the Executive Branch into signing a bill that furthers the aims and agenda of the Republican Party.

Founding Fathers

This is politics and is trumped by The Fourteenth Amendment, Section 4.  In the absence of action by The Legislative Branch, who authorized the debt, The Executive Branch, i.e., The President, must act to protect the “Full faith and credit of the United States.”  It cannot be that we lose our “AAA” bond rating. He must protect the world’s confidence in the United States paying its bills. After determining that The Congress will not or cannot act in time to avert a crisis(default), President Obama should use his Executive Power, invoke the Fourteenth Amendment and raise the Debt Ceiling. Yes, this would be a momentous use of power, but, a necessary one. President Obama hesitates to use this power which is based on an obscure part of The Constitution.  After due reflection, he must act. Of course all the opinions herein are mine only and the product of a humble bachelor of science degree.

Washington Stinks! 1

Are the Democrats going to cave?  This morning Joe Scarborough said that we aren’t strong enough to take a stand and see it through until the end.[sic]  I just heard a rumor that Harry Reid is liking the Boehner plan?  Fellow Democrats, I am afraid this will end badly!  😦

BOEHNER & HIS PRIORITIES…

I am sure that last night you watched the President and the House Speaker.  President Obama laid out his easy to understand plan to share the burden of fixing our financial crisis. His plan cuts across all levels of society. This includes sacrifices for the rich, the top 1% of our population. Speaker John Boehner quickly responded with his plan which clearly does not protect us from having our AAA credit rating downgraded.  Moodys and Standard and Poors have warned that if we do not address our debt in a meaningful way, they will downgrade us for the first time in history. Boehner’s plan does not have enough time for us to demonstrate that we are on the right track.  Raising the Debt Ceiling is our urgent first step.

There are at lest three reasons why Republicans object to President Obama’s solution:

  1. President Obama wants to eliminate tax cuts on the rich which means raising their taxes.  These are the Bush Tax Cuts. In their zeal to protect the rich from their patriotic duty, the Republicans think we have forgotten the massive windfall (tax cuts) they received only 7 months ago.
  2. Republicans want dramatic cuts to the entitlement programs which allow a major portion of us to survive: Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Of course Democrats object to how deeply this cuts would be. IMHO, it is not fair for the middle-class and the poor to sacrifice and the rich and highly profitable corporations to be protected from feeling any pain.  The idea that the Bush Tax Cuts would spark the rich to create jobs has been discredited.  Speaker Boehner, Majority Leader Cantor and Minority Leader McConnell will not tell you why the rich should not pay more in taxes to grow our revenue which reduces our debt.  Those jobs the rich were expected to make would reduce the deficit in an important way. They are no longer entitled to these low tax rates.
  3. THE MOST IMPORTANT REASON BY THE REPUBLICANS OPPOSE EVERY PLAN PRESIDENT OBAMA DEVISES IS EXPRESSED BELOW IN A VIDEO BY SEN. MITCH McCONNELL (R-KY):

It’s all about politics, people!  The amount of pain the Republicans want to inflict on us to advance their agenda is shocking.  Why must all the middle-class and the poor suffer for Republicans to secure the Presidency?  Last night the computers that give us social media were overwhelmed by our outcry of unfairness. Let’s do that every day until the Debt Ceiling is raised.  That MUST happen and soon or we will default on our loan payments….our debt. President Obama needs all of us to apply pressure to the Congress to press them to do the right thing.  President Obama is serious in his commitment to protecting our nation’s charge: “The full faith and credit of the United States” must be protected under The Constitution.

Boehner Sets Trap to Catch…Wabbits?

Speaker John Boehner just appeared before the American and presented his plan. IMHO, he wasted a lot of his time for nothing.  That dog won’t hunt!

Another subject: IT’S ABOUT THE JOBS, STUPID! (PARDON)

President Barack Obama endorsed a debt-ceiling proposal by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that would cut government spending by $2.7 trillion and increase the federal borrowing limit through 2012, the White House said.Republican aides revealed details on a competing plan that House Speaker John Boehner is moving forward with separately; it would aim for roughly $3 trillion in cuts and raise the debt ceiling in two stages.

Democrats and Republicans are at an impasse on a deal to raise the nation’s debt limit. Without an agreement in place by August 2, the U.S. government risks defaulting on some of its debt obligations.” [Source: CNN]

SAY, WHERE DO YOU SHOP?

SAY, WHERE DO YOU SHOP?  Do any of these shops and products appear on your shopping list?  Will your Christmas savings account do much damage at any of these venues?  They say that only 1% of our population are truly wealthy.  And, they stay rich because the Republican Party and its campaign donors protect the Bush Tax cuts, et als which favor the rich. The American rich really enjoy their position in our society.  They are the elites! And, at the same time, they support reducing the benefits of the other 99% of the American population.  They want benefits under Social Security, Medicare and, especially, Medicaid (for the poor) fundamentally changed and reduced.  When the <<nouveau riche>> reach millionaire status and above, they undergo  a curious transformation which turns them against the masses where they were born, grew and became successful.

We witness the Republican Party (popularly known as the party of the rich) fiercely protecting low tax rates (Bush Tax Cuts) for the rich and opposing Shared Sacrifice, a concept we must accept or be doomed. Wikipedia does not cover “shared sacrifice,” but, it is a simple concept: All levels of society should contribute their fair share of cuts and taxes to solve the current financial crisis. Our President is rich, yet, he says that he is willing to pay more taxes. However, he, and many rich people, are Democrats.  The Democratic Party is known for its championing issues germane to the lower classes: Food, shelter, clothing, medicine, healthcare and employment with fair wages. Oh, and the bane of Republican existence: THE UNIONS!

SO, WHERE DO YOU SHOP? I would think at Sears, Macys, Food Lion, Chevrolet, etc. You live on a budget and know not the meaning of “spendthrift.”  You do not live “high on the hog,” and eat moderately priced foods and wear sensible clothes and shoes. Many of you belong to the class of immigrants who struggle and reach varying degrees of success in business. The 2012 Election is afoot and you must be involved.  Doesn’t it make sense to vote for politicians who protect your interests? Democrats do! Shouldn’t you vote for politicians who are will to compromise in governance…unlike the Tea Party who control the Republican Party?  Our current financial dilemma is being orchestrated by the Republican Party and more so, those freshman Republicans in the US House who refuse to protect “the full faith and credit of the United States.”  There can be no other choice for you in November 2012: VOTE DEMOCRATIC!

Republicans Have Crossed the Line

Are you following the ebb and flow of negotiations on our debt, spending and raising the Debt Ceiling?  Republican leaders keep repeating their mantra: “The American people voted for spending cuts.” I just saw a chart on CNN where anchor, John King, showed a chart revealing that months ago 47% of Republican voters thought their party (driven by their Tea Party element) was on the right track.  Today some of those voters, more than 10%, have changed their minds!

While reducing spending  and reducing the National Debt are laudable goals, Republican voters did not vote for package of legislation that Republicans in Congress are trying to force the President into excepting.  They did not vote for their leaders to risk “the full faith and credit of the United States.”  And, that is just what John Boehner (R-OH), Eric Cantor (R-VA) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY) are doing to us.  Under revered President Ronald Reagan, the Debt Ceiling was raised 18 times as a matter of course.  Today, the Tea Party holds the needed raise in the Debt Ceiling hostage in an attempt to force their agenda onto all of us Americans. If last November’s election were held today, there would be a different result.

IMHO, what the Tea Party, whose champion is Mrs. Marcus (Michele) Bachmann, is not in keeping with Christian and the best of American values. Jesus would not resort to blackmail. Jesus would be a fair negotiator and not depart from a meeting as a part of strategy. Jesus would not make unreasonable demands and would not try to solve our financial crisis of the backs of the poor and middle-class.  Did Jesus preach to the rich class of his era? Remember the Pharisees? No, he taught Christian principles to those at the bottom of society: The oppressed.  The working class who toil to make the wealthy grow even more wealthy and powerful.  Today only 1% of our population is rich.  They possess an outstanding part of American wealth in cash, corporate profits and resulting political power. Would Jesus want to make the rich even richer?  If He were here, He would preach against the oppression by the rich in our country. Remember Jesus’ teachings from as far back as Sunday School? Christ would be at the negotiation tables and would influence the process of negotiation and the result. Jesus Christ is missing from the negotiations in Washington, D.C. Speaker Boehner and the President should ask, “What would Jesus do?”

And, what are the Republicans trying to accomplish?  On the state level they are using the funds of super pacs and donors (like the Koch brothers) to assume governmental power into the hands of the few.  They want to take away the people’s power and sell off public assets.  They want to destroy the people’s voice and champion –the unions. (Witness Wisconsin.)  Have you been following the Governor Walker scandal? You see daily on the TV what Republicans are doing on a federal level. I do not think Republicans value the opinions of the American people expressed in polls, emails and letters sent to them.  Opinions delivered by phone go unheeded. I am tempted to give into frustration and say, “This is evil!, but, first I think I should look up the definition of evil:

Definition of EVIL

1
a : morally reprehensible : sinful, wicked <an evil impulse> b : arising from actual or imputed bad character or conduct <a person of evil reputation>
2
a archaic : inferior b : causing discomfort or repulsion : offensive <an evil odor> c : disagreeable <woke late and in an evil temper>
3
a : causing harm : pernicious <the evil institution of slavery> b : marked by misfortune : unlucky
evil adverb, archaic
evil·ly adverb
evil·ness noun
Well, there you have it. How do you think the goings on in Washington qualify for this definition?  On this Sunday, I ask you to pray for the nation and our leaders.  Ask God to warm their hearts with the love of Jesus. Cause their tongues to speak as Jesus would and give us a Christian solution to all our problems with the Congress.  Heavenly Father, please bless the United States of America!
[As you pray, play “The Church’s One Foundation.]
