Mr. President, What’s Fair is Fair!

Mr. President:

I have worked hard all my life to reach my “Golden Years.”  I paid my FICA contributions without fail. I have not amassed a fortune. I depend on Social Security to survive. I speak for millions of Americans like me.  During our working life, we supported countless retirees with full benefits and COLAs as the law dictated. It is not fair to change the rules after the game has been played.  The Republican refrain, “We don’t have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem,” is primarily wrong. We need more Americans working and paying into the system to support our level of benefits.  Congress and past presidents have raided our “lockbox” and used Social Security funds for other purposes.  Now you, Mr. President and Congress must restore our money. That requires MORE REVENUE, Tea Party! Now is not the time to break the government’s contract with its workers.

Mr. President, don’t cave in to Republicans who are controlled by their Tea Party element.  Last December you and the Congress waited until the 11th hour to solve the then financial crisis.  Republicans (and the Tea Party) are waiting until the last-minute to resolve our current financial crisis Some say that there is not enough time make your “big deal” happen before the August 2 deadline for raising the Debt Ceiling.  Please get all your ducks in a row and pass an interim measure in Congress as a bridge to your comprehensive “big deal” that will make a significant difference in our lives.  Those of us on Social Security have not had a Cost-of-Living increase in two years while prices in all sectors have risen. Please, sir, protect our benefits extant so that we can endure the short future God has planned for us.  Make changes in the workforce that will secure the benefits of Social Security (and, indeed, Medicare and Medicaid) for future retirees and the poor.  The world depends on American promises globally. Can we depend on you and the Congress for local justice and fairness? PROTECT THE GOVERNMENT/WORKER CONTRACT!

ALLEN WEST: No Way to Talk to a Lady! 1

“You are the most vile, unprofessional, and despicable member of the US House of Representatives… you are not a Lady.”
– Republican Congressman Allen West in an e-mail to
Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz

Last night, Republican Rep. Allen West sent a disgraceful e-mail outburst to one of our most accomplished colleagues in the House, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, telling her to “shut the heck up” for daring to challenge the GOP plan to gut Medicare and Social Security to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.

I wish I could say I was surprised.

Unfortunately, this is exactly the sort of partisan tantrum we’re used to from House Republicans as they push our economy to the brink of disaster while pandering to their Tea Party base. [SOURCE DCCC]

Greg’s Guide to Chivalry

“Chivalry refers to the medieval institution of knightly virtues, of honour, and of courtly love. A noble man followed an unwritten code of chivalry toward noble ladies above all, the knight was to be gracious and gentle. The idealized relationship between knight and lady was that of honourable and virtuous courtly love.”

Debt and Debt Ceiling Update

President Obama would agree to a short-term extension of the federal debt ceiling if there is agreement on a significant deficit reduction plan by Democrats and Republicans that needs more time to be passed by Congress, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Wednesday.

Obama has steadfastly opposed a short-term deal, going as far as to threaten to veto any legislation that contained such provisions. But Obama declared a long-term deficit-reduction plan unveiled Tuesday by the bipartisan “Gang of Six” senators consistent with his approach to solving the problem. Senate Democratic leaders say that further negotiations on that plan are needed to work out the deal and it would not get through Congress before the country reaches its debt ceiling on August 2.

Dear Anxiously Waiting for November 2012…

The “Gang of Six” is back at work.  “Here’s a PDF of the terrible, no good, very bad Gang of Six outline. “

USE THE 14TH AMENDMENT – National Memo: “Former President Bill Clinton says that he would invoke the so-called constitutional option to raise the nation’s debt ceiling “without hesitation, and force the courts to stop me” in order to prevent a default, should Congress and the President fail to achieve agreement before the August 2 deadline.” [National Memo]

Are you like me? Anxiously waiting for November 6, 2012? Yes, that is Election Day! The 112th Congress has been a sorry disappointment.  Why are we paying legislators who can’t get together and make laws? Jim DeMint (R-SC), what we need a Constitutional amendment that regulates how many hours per week senators and representatives must clock in.  There should be some scheme to punish those who cannot keep up. Perhaps we should have some program which assures that those we elect are truly responding to our wishes and giving us a voice and influence greater than Washington lobbyists and large campaign donors.  This would finally end gridlock in Congress and we’d see them churning out laws like creamy butter.  Any ordinary business that operated like Congress would fail miserably!

To say that the next election will be interesting is an understatement.  Wikipedia has painted a lovely picture of US Senate and US House players in the election. Lot’s of detail. Check it out!

US HOUSE WASTES MONEY ADDING TO THE DEFICIT

CNN Breaking News

The House of Representatives votes 234-190 to pass a “cap, cut and balance” bill, which would impose strict caps on all future federal spending while making it significantly tougher to raise taxes.

President Barack Obama has said he would veto such a measure, favored by hard-line conservative, and Democrats in the Senate have said they would kill it if it passes the House. Earlier Tuesday, Obama said legislators “don’t have any more time to engage in symbolic gestures” with time running out to raise the country’s debt ceiling in order to avoid default.

WHY IS CONGRESS JUST TAKING UP SPACE?

WHY IS CONGRESS WASTING TIME WRITING AND CONSIDERING STUPID LEGISLATION THAT CANNOT PASS? Jim Demint (R-SC) wants a balanced budget amendment which has no chance of passing. Senators Reid and McConnell are working on a bill that does not give President Obama the “big deal” he wants ($4 trillion). With only 4 days before his deadline, President Obama is threatening vetoes.   Have you let your senator and representative know that you demand raising the debt limit?  Don’t just leave it to the other guy.

ELIZABETH WARREN: DESTINED TO BE A BFD!!!

David Shankbone/Wikipedia Commons

“Elizabeth Warren: Passed Over for CFPB Post, But…”

“…Warren has been mentioned, as they say, as a possible candidate for the US Senate seat in Massachusetts won by Republican Scott Brown in early 2010. This seat was held by Ted Kennedy until his death. Brown won a special election to fill the vacancy, and the seat is up next year. Is Warren seriously considering a bid? She hasn’t done anything to stop speculation about her possible candidacy. When I asked her about this last year, she refused to rule out a run.

If Warren were to run, she would start off in a strong position. She has a national following, and her campaign would draw country-wide attention. She could raise plenty of money via the Internet a la Obama in 2008. (And Scott Brown would soak up loads of donations from the financial sector.) Warren would be a cause, not merely a candidate. That is, of course, no guarantee of success. While her straight-talking, folksy, and authentic middle-class populism would be a tremendous asset, she doesn’t have experience as a vote-for-me pol. And she’d have to decide if she’s willing to do the mundane work and money-grubbing that is necessary. But the prospect of Warren reclaiming Kennedy’s seat ought to hearten any progressive who’s discouraged not to see Obama wage a Harry-versus-Voldemort battle on her behalf.” [SOURCE: “Mother Jones”]
