Congress: Santa Who Always Delivers (image)

Exactly one year from today, millions of Americans will head to polling places all around the country.

We’ve been reminding you of that a lot lately because so much is at stake.

And it’s time to kick up our organizing efforts, no matter where you live.

Today, we’re rolling out an interactive campaign calendar that’s going to play a crucial role in keeping us all looped in on the organizing we’re doing. It’s got it all — from upcoming primaries and debates to neighborhood canvasses and trainings happening in your community.

We’ll be updating this calendar regularly — and you’ll know about changes as soon as we do, because it can sync with your Outlook and Google calendars online. So important campaign dates, like the last day you can register to vote where you live, will be in the same place with your all your other to-dos.

If you want to be a part of all the building we’re going to do together in the next year, let us know by making a commitment to volunteer in this campaign — then download the calendar to stay in the loop.

Here’s what I think is really cool about this calendar: It doesn’t just keep you up to date on the campaign’s day-to-day activities. It actually maps out our organizing for the next 12 months — lets you know what phase we’re currently in, what that means for your community, and how the work we’re all doing is connected to the bigger picture.

Right now, we’re in the team-building phase — honing in on growing neighborhood teams of supporters in communities across the country. This is the phase that lays the foundation for the four phases to come. Click on one of the links in this message, and have a look for yourself.

When you do, you’ll see a number — 365 — the number of days we have to build teams and reach out to voters between now and Election Day. That time is a gift — but only if we use it. Let’s go.

Commit to volunteer for 2012, and stay up to date by downloading our new interactive calendar:

“US Needs a Break from Debt Deadlock”

US needs break from debt deadlock

By Juan Williams – 11/07/11 05:15 AM ET

Republican stonewalling on tax hikes for the very rich remains the primary obstacle to the supercommittee reaching a debt deal to restore stability to the nation’s economic future.

On the issue of raising taxes for the rich, the GOP majority in the House has defied the will of the American people, the Democratic majority in the Senate and the president.

So, it is maddening that some Democrats now want to mimic the GOP’s politics of polarization by undermining the supercommittee as it approaches its Nov. 23 deadline.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) recently introduced a bill to repeal the entire supercommittee, and the $1.2 trillion in automatic cuts that are to be made if no deal is reached. She says the committee is “illegitimate” and that it “borders on unconstitutional.”[The Hill] Continue reading.

Convicted Lobbyist Says Reforms Have Not Changed Washington, DC

K Street - Home to Lobbyists in DC

On Sunday night’s “60 Minutes” (CBS) Lesley Stahl interviewed notorious lobbyist, Jack Abramoff.  Do you know what it means to “lobby?”

Definition of LOBBY

: to conduct activities aimed at influencing public officials and especially members of a legislative body on legislation
1: to promote (as a project) or secure the passage of (as legislation) by influencing public officials
2: to attempt to influence or sway (as a public official) toward a desired action
lob·by·er noun
lob·by·ism noun
lob·by·ist noun
In my mind a lobbyist is a shady background, underground figure who skulks about the halls of power in Washington meeting with senators and reprentatives and plying them with gifts and cash to subvert their allegiance to the voters and campaigners and staff  back home who think that Congress is doing THE PEOPLE’S BUSINESS. And what do lobbyists get in return? They get to write US law favoring their clients!  This new code is written in deceptive language which is hard to understand in implication. Many of our legislators vote on laws without reading AND understanding them!

Jack Abramoff

In Lesley’s eye-opening interview Jack Abramoff reveals just how evil and dangerous  our tolerance of lobbyist really is. A Congress being courted daily by lobbyists will not truly reform the system.  It would be against their career and personal interests, et als.  In the interview tells us that the only way to change the system is outlaw any Congressional staff from holding lobbying position ever after their service.  They must just go home!
Here’s the interview in case you missed it Sunday night:
