For some time I have heard talking heads on TV say curious things about the state of Social Security. One report I wanted to take comfort in is that Social Security has a “lockbox” which protects our lifetime of FICAinvestments in Social Security. Most recently I learned definitively that there is no lockbox. Congress has been using our investments to fund the government for decades. They say they were borrowing the money, but, they have not paid these loans back. We continue to get our monthly income payments but they are guaranteed only through 2037. Well, that’s protection for some but fundamental changes must be made to Social Security to ensure that the government will always be able to honor its social contract with American workers. That contract provides that there will be income to live on when we are retired and no longer able to work. Personally, I was blessed that Social Security included disability payments when I needed them. While keeping benefits for those of us already receiving Social Security (and Medicare), we must push Congress to legislate a secure future for our children. A plan of requiring everyone to have personal accounts to give this protection via investments in Wall Street have shown to be a flight of fancy. Folly! IMHO, the vast majority of Americans don’t know the intricacies of stocks and bonds and derivatives and can’t learn enough to guarantee success. Once again I challenge you to get involved in our future and call or write your elected officials in Congress and get a promise to make Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid programs that we can depend on ad infinitum.
