The justices of the US Supreme Court enjoy a unique status in American governance: They have the job for life and have no code of ethics. The Court has a storied history of legal decisions which carried out what our founding father wrote in The Constitution and they went beyond, but, always within the bounds of spirit of the law and intent. At first the Court was not powerful, but, Chief Justice Marshall took actions which made the Court supreme. And, that is how we all view the US Supreme Court: The final interpreter of law and legality.

A large part of our reverence and respect for the Court is grounded in their seclusion from the public eye and lack of scandal. They probably had their own sense of propriety back then. When Clarence Thomas, black, became a candidate for the Court, I was so proud (even though he is from the other party). The nomination hearings in the US Senate took us down a sordid lane. On TV we watch gray-haired white men relish digging into the sex life black people, in this case, Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill, also black. IMHO, the hearings were perverse. ‘A pubic hair on a Coke can?’ What has that to do with interpreting the law?
Regrettably, Justice Thomas and Justice Scalia have chosen to come out of isolation and show us their somewhat clear political views. Justice Scalia involved himself with a Tea Party class on The Constitution and Justice Thomas is under scrutiny for his wife’s receiving questionable campaign contributions.
He has received certain gifts from a powerful real estate magnate whose lawsuits came before the Court. Justice Thomas failed to the honorable thing and recuse himself. It is reported that Thomas received a wealth of gifts. Thousands of dollars! The Supreme Court reviewed Bush vs Gore and chose a President. Americans long for the days when certain people were good and some were not. And, we knew the difference!

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been very busy accepting gifts from organizations that file briefs before the court, attending political fundraisers, ruling on suits in which he or his wife have a conflict of interest, and hiding income. No wonder he hasn’t had time to ask a question from the bench in five years.
